new Macbook Pro battery

My Macbook Pro is over two years old now, it’s a 2Ghz core duo, revision A, as in… the first Macbook made available by Apple!

Sometime down the track Apple did a battery recall, I had a new battery sent to me to replace the existing one. How nice.

Some 184 cycles later and the battery only lasts about 40 mins. I asked my local Apple service centre if I could get a replacement, thinking my chances would be slim. How wrong was I!

Here I am, with a fresh, brand new, Macbook Pro battery! This goes nicely with the new pack I bought off ebay (also brand new) for around $70 AUD. Score, two really fresh batteries :)
Just need to take care of the little guys now! hehe. If you have a Rev A Macbook Pro, you might be able to get yourself a new battery (if yours is on it’s way out)… you should at least try!

Wordcamp Australia

It looks like we’re going to get a Wordcamp.

Details are vague at the moment but it’s looking like a Nov/Dec 2008 date and set to be in Sydney. Very little information is available at the official website:

australia.wordcamp.org

Feel free to join the mailing list available from the website to keep up to date.

I’m hoping to attend!

Samsung 2243BW

I just picked up a new 22″ monitor. I really needed just a bit more than my Macbook Pro’s built in 15″ widescreen display. I’ve been doing a fair bit of web work and photo post-processing lately, so it was probably well due.

I picked up a Samsung 2243BW after doing a little research on displays. I didn’t want to fork out for an Apple display at this stage and I’ve had good luck with Samsung monitor’s in the past.

It cost me $375 AUD, it has a cool stand that lets you rotate the display for portrait work, it’s bright, it’s fast, the controls are good, BUT it looks like crap on my Mac straight out of the box. Talk about in dire need of calibration. I’ve done my best to calibrate this thing by eye using the OS X calibration tools, but it still needs more work. Because of this, I’ve ordered a Pantone Huey Pro calibration device. So much for a cheap monitor. The Huey Pro cost me $181 AUS. Suddenly my cheap display isn’t so cheap! (should have bought an ACD?)

For most things this monitor is great, and doesn’t need careful calibration. For doing my photo work in Aperture however, it badly needs work. My Macbook’s built in panel puts this thing to shame.

In any case, I’m loving the display, I’ve been working on it exclusively (except for my photo’s, until I calibrate it). It’s nice how the Macbook Pro can operate in ‘closed lid mode’. I’ve also got the Apple Wireless Keyboard going, and I picked up a Wireless Might Mouse just yesterday to compliment the keyboard, I like it!

Wordpress 2.5 likes Safari

I’ve just finished upgrading all my wordpress sites to the latest version 2.5. It’s nice, I like it a lot. It’s also fast!

One of the things I’ve really been waiting for is better Safari web browser compatibility. Previously, trying to compose a new post with Safari in wordpress with clean line breaks was a real nightmare.

Looks like the guys have come through with the goods because the visual editor just loves Safari!

Well done Wordpress team!

Some issues with my AppleTV 2.0

Since updating to ATV 2.0 and re-hacking (see, ATVfiles and NitoTV). I’ve been having a few minor issues.

The biggest issue at the moment is sometimes when using ATVfiles to navigate and play my movies, I loose the sound. A reboot of the ATV is required to get the sound working again. Strange!

If anyone has experienced something like this, let me know. In the meantime I guess I’ll go check the wiki over at http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/

Wordpress 2.5

Today I upgraded this blog to the latest Wordpress (2.5)

It took me 5 minutes.

  • I backed up my entire blog directory on my web server (moved it to another directory name)
  • Disabled my plugins
  • Installed a fresh wordpress (wget www.wordpress.org/latest.zip)
  • Unzipped it (unzip latest.zip whilst in my root web folder)
  • Renamed it to my blog dir name (mv wordpress/ invertedreality/)
  • Copied the wp-config.php file, plugins and themes from my old install to the new install.
  • Ran the upgrade script from myurl.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php
  • Logged into my admin panel, re-enabled my plugin’s, all done.

Easy, fast, and the site seems a little fast when browsing it too!

Apple Wireless Keyboard

The other day my wife’s Macbook Pro decided to spit out one of it’s fans. It wasn’t happy. We decided to stop using it while it was being repaired in case it over heated or something.

Luckily, we have a handful of Mac’s in the house, so I set her up with the Mac Mini and migrated her data from her laptop so she could still play her cards widget, check facebook and email her friends…. you know, important stuff :)

Flock web browser review

I’ve been using Flock at work now since I blogged earlier about it.

Flock is a new web browser (for Mac, Linux and Windows) that has bounced onto the scene and is geared towards those who are into social networking web sites and media. I’m going to talk about some of the neat things that (in my opinion) makes Flock worth the download.

Firstly, if your on Facebook (who isn’t now?) then Flock is automatically going to make you smile. The way Flock integrates with the Facebook frame work is pretty damn good. Really good in fact.

Charlotte is born

I’m a dad, I’m a dad, I’m a dad!

Can you tell I’m really excited?

Our little girl was born at 6:21pm on Tues 11th March, 8lbs 8oz. She’s a cutie!

She’s even got her own website, how spoilt! http://www.charlottemandy.com/

We’re pretty much calling it a ‘life blog’ and we will contribute to the site until she’s old enough to do it herself! I wonder how many other ‘life blogs’ there are out there?
