Samsung 2243BW

I just picked up a new 22″ monitor. I really needed just a bit more than my Macbook Pro’s built in 15″ widescreen display. I’ve been doing a fair bit of web work and photo post-processing lately, so it was probably well due.

I picked up a Samsung 2243BW after doing a little research on displays. I didn’t want to fork out for an Apple display at this stage and I’ve had good luck with Samsung monitor’s in the past.

It cost me $375 AUD, it has a cool stand that lets you rotate the display for portrait work, it’s bright, it’s fast, the controls are good, BUT it looks like crap on my Mac straight out of the box. Talk about in dire need of calibration. I’ve done my best to calibrate this thing by eye using the OS X calibration tools, but it still needs more work. Because of this, I’ve ordered a Pantone Huey Pro calibration device. So much for a cheap monitor. The Huey Pro cost me $181 AUS. Suddenly my cheap display isn’t so cheap! (should have bought an ACD?)

For most things this monitor is great, and doesn’t need careful calibration. For doing my photo work in Aperture however, it badly needs work. My Macbook’s built in panel puts this thing to shame.

In any case, I’m loving the display, I’ve been working on it exclusively (except for my photo’s, until I calibrate it). It’s nice how the Macbook Pro can operate in ‘closed lid mode’. I’ve also got the Apple Wireless Keyboard going, and I picked up a Wireless Might Mouse just yesterday to compliment the keyboard, I like it!
